In memory of Paolo Carraresi

Paolo Carraresi died suddenly and unexpectedly in the night between the fourth and the fifth of March, 1994, when he was only 47. He has been my supervisor in my early researches, and the one who made me appreciate this profession. He really taught me a lot, not only from the scientific point of view ,but especially from the human relationship point of view. I've been very lucky in meeting him and in being able to establish a real intensive collaboration with him, despite my aversion to tobacco! Unfortunately it lasted too short.

I like to recall him in his frequent and most joyful moments, as it may appear from the following picture. The picture has been taken when Paolo was sailing in the sea in front of Pisa on his "Barbasso". Paolo was very keen in making jokes, and of course he accepted them with a great sense of humor. I think one of the best jokes that I managed to organize was to spread this fake newspaper article during one of the first day of his course: the text of the article is true (I changed only the identity of the arrested person, putting the name of Paolo, and the picture). The day that I distributed the article at the university, students were not very surprised, knowing his attitude towards churches, and didn't go in the classroom, supposing he was really in jail. In real life Paolo never set on fire any church, nor went to jail.
